Crawl Space Encapsulation Prevents Musty Odors

As homeowners with a crawl space, is it normal to smell a musty odor? If you have a crawl space musty odor, it is not normal and could most likely indicate mold or another issue.

What Causes Musty Odors in a Crawl Space?

Because crawl spaces tend to have high moisture levels and are warmed by your home above and the ground below, they are a prime environment for attracting mold. Mold loves dark spaces, unseasoned lumber, and high humidity levels. If there are moldy, musty odors, then mold will be somewhere.

Encapsulated crawl space

In the case of moldy wood, there will need to be a source of water nearby. This water can enter a crawl space through poorly designed downspouts or grading, groundwater flooding, plumbing leaks, or water vapor passing through concrete into the air.

If you have a crawl space vent, the open vent let in humid summer air, which turns into condensation in your crawl space.

How Can Those Musty Odors Affect Air Quality and My Health?

If your crawl space has mold, you will able to tell—your house will smell musty, and you may even begin to feel or display symptoms of mold and dust mite allergies. These can cause certain health problems, including wheezing, coughing, stuffy nose, and itching.

A damp crawl space environment can also attract rodents and other pests, such as termites, carpenter ants, and wood-boring beetles.

If that isn’t bad enough, as crawl spaces begin to rot and decay, the floor above will begin to sag, buckle, or become uneven. Doors may jam, mold may grow on first floor carpeting, and, if left untreated, the floor itself will collapse inwards.

How Does Crawl Space Encapsulation Help Prevent Musty Odors?

Traditional methods of mold removal, such as bleach and water, will not provide a long-term solution for mold removal because they don’t address rot damage or humidity issues. Mold will begin growing again in 24-48 hours if the mold-growing environment is not changed.

The ONLY solution to crawl space mold and moisture is crawl space encapsulation, which is the addition of a heavy-duty moisture barrier to the dirt floor of your crawl space, sealed foundation vents, insulated walls, and special crawl space dehumidifiers.

It is most effective when you seal the space completely.  When you encapsulate your crawl space, you prevent moisture from building up in this space and prohibit mold growth.  Encapsulation keeps moisture and dangerous pests at bay and makes your indoor space comfortable and healthy once again.
